In The Mysterious Mr. Maris, historian and author Roy Ziegler tells the alluring story of the rapid rise of a young, early 19th-century merchant who became a builder, bank president, and operator of four mills producing flour, cotton, wool, and flax linen in New Hope, Pennsylvania. Partnering with his father-in-law, Maris developed numerous construction projects in the growing town while continuing to expand his international mercantile business in Philadelphia during the early part of the industrial revolution. Follow Maris’s meteoric rise, financial indiscretions, and ultimate tragic end.
Roy Ziegler is the historian for the New Hope Historical Society and is a past president. He has served on its board of directors since 2002. He chairs the annual Benjamin Parry Day celebration and the April Speaker Series. He is also chair of the Society’s media outreach committee and produces and conducts the Society’s walking tours of historic New Hope. He has written four books on early American History.
Tickets are $20 each and include his book.

It was too much to ask. But sometimes too much is what we ask of the people we love most.
Radclyffe, New York, is an idyllic upstate town, nestled in the hills and complete with artisanal bakeries, pottery studios, and hidden swimming holes. Ruth and her wife, Wyn, are living the dream (or Wyn’s dream, at least) with their four children on their small farm, which is also the bucolic gathering place for their circle of friends. It’s a sweet life, but there’s a secret at its center, one that not even Ruth’s best friend, Caroline, knows.
A fifty-two-year-old debut novelist, Erin O. White is also an essayist and the author of the memoir Given Up for You. After growing up in Colorado and living for twenty years in western Massachusetts, she now lives with her wife and daughters in Minneapolis.
Tickets are $20 (books sold separately)
Farley's Bookshop will have books available for purchase and for Erin to sign.
