A look back at our activities since September and other good-to- know items:
Our Annual Book Sale
The Friends of the New Hope & Solebury Library’s Annual Book Sale was one of the most successful sales in the history of the library. The 10-day long sale (September 5 through September 15, with a member preview on September 4) raised more than $3,200. For the first time the location of the sale was in downtown New Hope, thanks to the generous donation by The Four Crows of their first floor space at 41 North Main Street. We were pleased to see library supporters, local residents and tourists support the sale.
It takes a village to run a book sale. So we would like to thank the Four Crows for the site of the book sale; St. Martin’s of Tours for the use of a class room in July and August for collection and sorting of books; more than 50 volunteers who helped us sort more than 250 boxes of books, price, and organize these books for the sale; and the volunteers who staffed the sale. Ten of the North Main Street businesses provided a reward card with a 10% discount to the first 200 book sale purchasers. Thanks to New Hope Shoes, Ginnie Burke Collections, Top Notch Accessories, Ferry Hill, Topeo Gallery and Topeo South), Village Toy Shoppe, Diana Michaels Jewelers, Dominique Daniela, Gallery Piquel, Salon Gratitude and Pudge Cakes.

GOOD NEWS: Our Support HELPS Gain INCREASES IN Library Funding
Adding to the library’s efforts, a strong show of support at local government meetings and person-to-person advocacy by members of the Friends of the Library have helped attain these increases in library funding:
The Solebury Board of Supervisors voted to increase the township’s library budget by $30,000 for 2015.
New Hope Borough Council voted to give the library $32,644 in 2015, an amount more than was asked for.
Members Appreciation Party
Thank you to our members, as we revitalized our Friends of the Library organization in 2014 (and how!). This was the theme of our first Members Appreciation Party, held on November 16 and attended by 36 members who enjoyed delicious light bites, wine, fresh apple cider and other refreshments—in addition to the good company.
Friends of the Library President Charlie Huchet recapped the year’s activities and successes; Library Board President Jacqui Griffith, also a Friend of the Library, spoke about the energy that is building in support of the library and gave glimpses into upcoming renovations that will enhance library operations and patrons’ enjoyment.

This “Dual Jewel” event featured both donated vintage jewelry and new Silpada brand jewelry represented by Audria White, who donated all of her proceeds to the Friends. Members of the public were invited to browse and buy, wine in hand. They gained beautiful jewelry; the Friends gained $438.75. September 2014 Vol. 1 No. 2
Greetings, Friends of the New Hope & Solebury Library! In this newsletter, you’ll find these topics:
Coming September 5 -14—Our Annual Library Book Sale!
After weeks of intense planning and labor, the Friends have gathered the books (about 3000), arranged for temporary storage space (in the former school building at St. Martin of Tours church), and found a sales venue (the old Borough Hall building on North Main Street). The book sale will be held September 5 -14.
The books have now been transported to the old Borough Hall building, with the space generously donated for this event by the new owners, The Four Crows. Publicity is also in place, including a news release in the Bucks County Herald and signs created by Kristin Reilly and placed strategically around town.
A full roster of volunteers has been scheduled to work at the book sale. Now, we need customers to buy the books. PLEASE HELP SPREAD THE WORD.
Preview sale September 4 a special thank you to Friends of the Library
As a special thank you to volunteers and all members of the Friends for your support, there will be a preview sale on the evening of September 4 from 5:30 – 7:30 PM. Come—you’ll have first choice.
Many thanks to our book sale volunteers
So many have helped prepare for the book sale, often in multiple ways, and to sell, often on multiple days. In alphabetical order: Joanne Bitzer, Lawrence Booth, Anthony Canike, Marlene Clark, Louise Dougherty, Reni Fetterolf, Ricki Fisher, Neil Gallagher, Jacqui Griffith, Charlie Huchet, Liz Island, Chris Kerr, JaQuinley Kerr, Pamm Kerr, Ruth McMonigle, Kathy Meier, Lisa Mui, Silvia Napiaski, Mary Ann Reeser, Kristin Reilly, Joanne Romalowski, Nancy Salgado, Karen Seehausen, Carol and Paul Spencer, Elizabeth and Karl Varnai, Audria White, Polly Wood, Jerry Zipkin. Thank you, too, to Carol Taylor’s son and his friend, who helped transport books.
Our Benefit concert—Good turnout, good time, good fundraising
On June 22, as part of the Delaware Canal Festival, our own Friend and Board member Karl Varnai led his Long Hill String Band in a benefit concert for the Friends of the Library.
Playing at the New Hope Arts Center for an audience of 64, the band featured songs of the canals, Old Time and Bluegrass tunes, and even a riveting version of a New Orleans blues classic, St. James Infirmary. Enthusiasm was high—lots of toe-tapping, clapping, and sing-a-long-ing.
As an extra treat, Susan Taylor, Executive Director of the Friends of the Delaware Canal, provided commentary on the history of the canal.
Thank you for making this concert possible
Those who worked hard to make the concert go from idea to on-stage included Neil Gallagher (publicity), JaQuinley Kerr (photography, setup), Pamm Kerr (Friends table), Donna Peiffer-Both (concert program, refreshment sales) and her daughter Elizabeth (refreshment sales), Kristin Reilly (publicity, social media), Karen Seehausen (ticket sales, publicity) and Steve Seehausen (setup), Carol Spencer (refreshments, ticket sales) and Paul Spencer (refreshments, setup), Karl Varnai (band).
The concert added $1,386 to our fundraising.
NEW Friends of the Library GARDENing COMMITTEE SPRUCING UP LIBRARY GROUNDS
Pulling weeds, sweeping the walkway, spreading mulch, Karl Varnai and Paul Spencer, with help from Nancy Salgado, have been contributing to making our library’s grounds more inviting. Their efforts are much appreciated by those who use the library.
The gardening committee (fittingly) is growing. Thank you to Kris Reilly and Fernanda Hermo who have recently signed up. If you, too, can volunteer for spruce-up gardening activities at our library, please contact Karl Varnai at kvarnai@comcast.net.

has again demonstrated her love for our communities through a recent generous gift to the Friends of the Free Library of New Hope & Solebury.
Her gift is a substantial help in meeting our fundraising goal for the Library this year. Doro, thank you so much!

By “One of Our Own”
The Friends of the Library is proud to announce that "one of our own" has joined the ranks of local authors. Elizabeth Varnai, an active volunteer and member of the Board of the Friends of the Library has published her first book, GOOD MORNING LOON through Vista Court Books. Subtitled It's Early Morning...What's Happening on the Lake?, it’s a picture book for children based on her experiences while canoeing on the lakes of the Adirondack Mountains in northern New York State.
In pre-publication reviews, Avery Cleary of the Children & Nature Network described GOOD MORNING LOON as "a truly lovely story of connecting with the natural world. The gorgeous illustrations (by watercolor artist Kate Hartley) and playful discoveries are a delight."
Janet Ady, Senior Environmental Educator with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, found GOOD MORNING LOON to be an "elegant story, accurately highlighting wildlife species of the Northeast with compelling illustrations and a simple, memorable storyline". She goes on to say that "reading it will likely motivate parents and children to go outside to watch and learn about nature together, and create their own lasting memories."
Elizabeth and her husband Karl are recent members of our community. Karl is also a member of the Friends Board, as well a foot-stompin' fiddler with the Long Hill String Band (pictured above).
GOOD MORNING LOON is available locally at the New Hope & Solebury Library (of course!) as well as Farley's, the Doylestown Bookshop, Booktenders’ Secret Garden in Doylestown, and the Peace Valley Nature Center. Elizabeth is scheduled to give a reading for children (and adults!) at our library on November 18.
Thank you, Elizabeth, for making this fine contribution to this community and, we hope, to your emerging national readership. Many kids will be inspired by your own spirit of curiosity, anticipation, and excitement captured in your story.
(In honoring full disclosure, Elizabeth is also the editor of this newsletter, but she only owns the corrected spelling in this announcement!)

(Reported by our Treasurer Lawrence Booth and our consultant Kathy Meier)
Thanks to membership dues, fundraising activities, and donations, including a generous gift from Doro Kerr (please see below), we’ve reached 90% of our commitment of $12,000 to benefit the library. Onward and upward! Please continue to encourage friends to become Friends, attend future events, and join the growing list of volunteers. More volunteers = more events = more help for the library!
A special thank you to a special donor
A sage once said, "The heart is a thousand-stringed instrument that can only be tuned with love."
Doro Kerr, long known for her years of service as a community volunteer and more recently through her philanthropic support of community organizations,
has again demonstrated her love for our communities through a recent generous gift to the Friends of the Free Library of New Hope & Solebury.
Her gift is a substantial help in meeting our fundraising goal for the Library this year. Doro, thank you so much!

Friends of the Library Facts:
The Friends of The Free Library of New Hope & Solebury is a non-profit, all volunteer organization established to raise funds in support of library services.
While we cooperate with the Board of the Free Library, The Friends is a separate organization, with more flexibility to acquire donations than libraries are legally allowed. Our fundraising—which supplements the library’s appeals—is vital to the library’s operations and helps it expand services in response to community’s needs.
Since November 2103, we have grown to more than 80 members. Thank you all for your support. Encourage your friends and neighbors to join you as members.
